This is the picture you see in every pond magazine. The point here is, to make the thing level. Build up dirt on the low sides and bring down the high sides. This took the entire 4th of July weekend but you'll see I also finally wised up and flattened that huge pile of dirt. I also ran into the first big problem...


See that white PVC pipe in the foreground? I had the brilliant idea of letting the pond overflow into the rainwater drain. So, I cored into the PVC only to discover that the inside was completely caked with sand; no water was going through that pipe! I cored a couple more holes down the line and spent a day flushing the sand out through the pipe with a garden hose. What a mess. It was about this time I began to wonder just what I had gotten myself into...


Resisting the urge to fill the hole back in and call it a day, I pushed forward. I lined the hole with newspapers to protect the liner. They say it eventually turns to clay. What ever... we were finished reading them anyway.
